Root Cause Tree Tutorial

When to use this tool

Root Cause Trees, also known as Root Cause Maps or Fault Tree Analysis, are especially useful when investigating “special causes,” failure incidents, or sentinel events (extremely rare or one-time events). By mapping a chain of causal relationships, they communicate the complex interactions of processes and help develop profound knowledge of the entire system. They may be used as part of a systematic DMAIC project, or for stand-alone root cause investigation.

Using EngineRoom

To use this tool:

  • Select the Analyze menu > Root Cause Tree. A study opens on the workspace, with a button to launch the Root Cause Tree workspace.
  • Click on the Launch button. This opens the root cause tree dialog in a separate browser tab/window.
  • Click on the Create button - the workspace opens, allowing for the area in which to build your tree. The panel on the left provides easy access to all the shapes needed to create the chart, as well as text boxes. The taskbar on the top gives access to the editing functions like save, Undo/redo, copy/paste, zoom in, etc.

The Root Cause Tree has several options that build out multiple parts of the tree for you including Parent-Child Relationships And Multiple Children.

When Auto-Connect is turned on, the selected shape will serve as the connection point for the next shape that is dragged on.
