DOE: From Hunch to Crunch (A Tremco Case Study)

Not every Lean Six Sigma project requires the use of Design of Experiments (DOE), but when DOE is warranted, it's not one and done. It is a sequential process which necessitates a series of question, action (experiment), answer leading to another question, another experiment, and another answer.

The process continues until a better understanding is achieved of the Y = f(x) relationship between the process inputs and process outputs of the system. What are the significant factors that affect your process output? In order to answer that question, you must separate the vital few from the trivial many. Quantifying and validating the relationship between "y" and "x" provides a window to the past, present, and — most importantly — the future.

DOE can lead to breakthrough improvements; however, jumping in and tinkering is costly. Using DOE successfully depends on understanding its fundamental concepts and the basic experimental design process. It takes careful planning, precise application of statistics, and a lot of discipline. This webinar provides an overview of the use of DOE in a Tremco Lean Six Sigma project.

Richard Wiltse is a Master Black Belt for Tremco Incorporated, a leading manufacturer of Sealants and Waterproofing technologies. During his tenure at Tremco Richard has been instrumental in developing Lean Six Sigma teams and sustainment systems that have accounted for a 27% improvement in productivity and over $500,000 in hard savings in a multi-facility environment.

Richard further developed the Continuous Improvement spirit across all levels of the Tremco organization, and introduced the "small k" process for idea generation. To date, this process has accounted for over 1,000 small ideas that have further increased productivity and spawned numerous Lean Six Sigma teams. Richard has also promoted Lean in the broader community by starting the Cleveland AME Lean Consortia.

Richard holds an MBA from Shenandoah University and a BS from Illinois State University.
