Detangling the Decision-Making Web

Consider that group dynamics and decision theory have been studied for decades.  Add that the quality, variety, and sheer number of inputs available to decision makers have improved exponentially thanks to data and analytics.  That combination would lead most to expect that our decisions have improved over time.

However, today's reality is that in the midst of growing complexity, our decisions may not be getting better.  A recent McKinsey survey reported that 72% of senior-executive respondents thought bad strategic decisions were either about as frequent as good ones or were the prevailing norm in their organization. Why? Disengagement. Paralysis. Anxiety.

One example that he offered was the story of John F. Kennedy encountering a janitor at a NASA space center.  When asked what he was doing, the janitor replied:  "Mr. President, I'm helping put a man on the moon."
