What is a

Lean Six Sigma

Green Belt?

A Green Belt identifies process problems and implements improvements.

A Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is at the heart of any process improvement team. A Green Belt leads improvement projects within their organization, iterating through the DMAIC process to increase efficiency and eliminate waste within processes. A certified Green Belt can accurately identify problems and think critically about potential solutions, ultimately resolving issues to increase efficiency, quality, safety, directly and indirectly impacting the bottom line.

A Green Belt can come from a wide variety of backgrounds and industries — Finance, HR, Manufacturing, Sales — all areas of a business can use a process improvement roadmap such as DMAIC or PDCA to solve problems better. Many companies invest in Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training so individuals build strong problem-solving tools to apply in their area of expertise within the organization. Green Belts typically spend between 25% and 50% of their time focusing on any given continuous improvement project.

When you break down the tasks of a Green Belt, they will often work independently on projects and assist Black Belts as a team member on complex projects. Knowledge and skills of a Green Belt include: project management, an understanding of process flow (including process mapping and design), statistical analysis, and team leadership.

What type of project work is expected from a Green Belt?

A Green Belt is expected to both lead improvement projects and provide support to Black Belts and Master Black Belts as part of a team on more complex projects. Typical project work revolves around solving problems that the customer and the organization care about. Improvements in safety, quality, lead time and cost are all example metrics within Green Belt projects.

Improvements in products, services, experiences and environments can all be measured with a combination of quantitative data and qualitative customer feedback. An electronics company might use product sales to test the appeal of its newest accessories, a restaurant chain might gather feedback from its waitstaff and customers to determine the best parts of its latest menu. Regardless of industry, a Green Belt can make a strong impact applying the DMAIC roadmap and their critical thinking skills to tackle any project set before them.

Training and Certification

What to look for in a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Course?

The most important aspect to any training program is not the credential received, cost paid, or length it takes, but the retention of knowledge gained and the confidence in applying the material after course completion. Upon completing a Green Belt training program, participants should be able to apply the DMAIC methodology to define and analyze a given process problem and ultimately find an effective improvement to implement, including affecting the right change management to sustain the solution.

The field work of a Green Belt requires both thoughtful evaluation and practical statistical analysis. A well-developed training program should provide experience with both. No matter the field or the complexity of the work, an effective program would offer plenty of practice utilizing the tools, and more importantly, give students open-ended opportunities to apply this problem-solving technique in a way that recreates the ambiguity and messiness of the real world.

Training programs are typically offered in three formats:

  • Online programs for self-guided learners who learn best from reading and exploring materials at their own pace.
  • Instructor-led, in-person training where a coach, typically a Black Belt or Master Black Belt, lectures.
  • A Blended Learning program features both a self-guided and instructor-led component that allows students to maximize the best of both worlds.
What does it mean to be certified?

It's important to note that there is no universal standard to Green Belt Certification. Many programs require completion of Green Belt training and the demonstration of knowledge by passing a corresponding Green Belt exam. MoreSteam also requires the execution of a Green Belt project to demonstrate successful practical application in the field. Certification comes with a printed certificate and an online badge or credential that can be added to the participant's digital backpack.
