MoreSteam.com Affirms Alignment of Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Curriculum with Revised ASQ SSBB Body of Knowledge Online Six Sigma Training Provides Path to Black Belt Certification

Columbus, OH — Following recent changes made by the American Society for Quality to its Six Sigma Black Belt body of knowledge, MoreSteam.com reviewed its online Lean Six Sigma Black Belt courses and verified their alignment with the revised 2007 ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt body of knowledge.

ASQ based its update to the 2001 SSBB BOK on the results of a job analysis survey that ASQ conducted. In November 2006, ASQ sent a survey to more than 1,200 certified Six Sigma Black Belts in order to validate that the topics tested by ASQ in its certification process are, in fact, used by practicing Black Belts in a variety of industry sectors. Only those topics that met specific thresholds of use or importance were brought forward to the 2007 BOK. MoreSteam.com’s Lean Six Sigma Black Belt courses cover each of the topics included in the ASQ 2007 BOK.

“Overall, we didn’t find ASQ’s changes in the Black Belt BOK to be substantial. The majority of the content remained unchanged and our MoreSteam.com Lean Six Sigma Black Belt courses already covered most of the new topics. The several topics that we didn’t already include, we quickly added,” commented Bill Hathaway, MoreSteam.com’s president.

“The ASQ Six Sigma bodies of knowledge are the closest thing to uniform standards for Six Sigma practitioners. CPAs, professional engineers, doctors, and lawyers have standardized licensing criteria to establish minimum requirements for education, experience, and knowledge. Unfortunately, no such global governance exists for Six Sigma professionals,” continued Hathaway.

When is a black belt not a Black Belt? Hathaway advised, “There are a number of Six Sigma programs that are broadly marketed but that address only a fraction of the SSBB BOK. We’re known for our content-rich curriculum. For example, the estimated completion time for the online MoreSteam.com Lean BB course is over 140 hours, not including any additional time allocated to a Six Sigma project. Other training providers offer Black Belt courses totaling 90 hours and I’ve even seen a Black Belt course advertised at 42 hours. Caveat emptor --- the variability in course hours obviously serves as a warning that buyers should carefully check how well a particular course adheres to the established ASQ criteria.”
