Introduction
World-class companies consider hiring decisions to be among their most critical activities. Hiring is a permanent decision that determines the character and capability of the organization for many years into the future. Following is a collection of proven best practices to recruit and retain the highest caliber workforce.
At Southwest Airlines, the philosophy is "hire for attitude, train for skill". Attitude is everything, and can't be taught.
Stock Options ยท Hiring decisions are permanent - never lower your standards just to get bodies. At the GE Engine plant in Durham, NC, all employees operate in self-directed teams. This level of distributed authority and responsibility is made possible only by hiring top-notch, very qualified people.
Interviewing and screening is not just and HR function. Line managers and associates participate in the interviewing process and assess the candidates' ability to function as part of a team.
Culture and environment are king. If you review Fortune's list of the best companies to work for, you will see that high compensation is not the common denominator, it's culture, environment, and working conditions.
Your best recruiters may be existing employees. Use them to find qualified recruits.
Bounty programs can be used to reward existing employees for successfully referring a new hire. The bounty may be paid out after the new employee passes through a probationary period.
Conduct drug screening and medical testing on-site to streamline the process and avoid sending recruits to different locations.
If you use a probation period to evaluate employees prior to awarding permanent full time status, take time to do the probationary assessment. This process if frequently given short shrift.
Use a mentor program to get new employees up to speed more quickly by pairing them with experienced employees who will share their knowledge.
Extensive training is a common denominator among high-performing companies, improving performance and aiding retention and job satisfaction.
Introduce recruits to the real work environment before they are hired. If they know exactly what they are getting into, they will be less likely to bail out after only hours or days on the job.
The quality of first line supervision has a significant impact on employee retention. It has been shown that the best supervisors have the lowest turnover.
