• The buttons on spreadsheets generated by Engine Room do not work.
The likely cause of this situation is the Excel macro security is set too high. The solutions is to set the macro security in Excel to "Medium" or lower:
  • Open Excel
  • Select "Tools" then "Macro" then "Security"
  • Change the setting to "Medium" or lower
• I cannot see the buttons on Engine Room generated spreadsheets: Affinity Diagram, CTQC Tree, Fishbone Diagram, Input Screening Report, and Monte Carlo Analysis.
This appears to be an issue with Microsoft Excel or the individual PC and is not related to Engine Room. At this time, the only solution is to run Engine Room on another PC. Other solutions are being investigated.

• If receive the error message "Your spreadsheet contains references to an invalid worksheet".
The error message, "Your spreadsheet contains references to an invalid worksheet" is believed to be a caused by a bug within the Microsoft VBA coding environment within which Engine Room was created. It does not affect the results of any Engine Room feature or function. While it has no impact on Engine Room features, the message can be usually be avoided by saving and closing workbooks from the Excel "File" menu rather than using the "X" in the upper right hand corner. Other possible solutions are:
  1. Use Excel's Detect and Repair feature. You may need the install CD. Open Excel and select "Help" and then "Detect and Repair..."
  2. Uninstall and reinstall Engine Room
    • Follow these instructions to uninstall Engine Room.

• I get an error message in Engine Room or template that states, "Unable to set the Installed property of the add-in class". Or, I get an error using the Multiple Regression template that states, "Please save your work, exit, and reopen the file." What does this mean?
This error is caused by a problem with Microsoft Excel. The problem is recognized by the development community but not by Microsoft. So far, the cause of the error has not been determined. What appears to happen is that Excel 'forgets' that the Analysis ToolPak add-ins are installed and cannot find them. Here is a work-around that often resolves the issue:
  1. Open Excel.
  2. Select 'Tools' and then 'Add-ins'.
  3. Uncheck the Analysis ToolPak add-ins (should be two of them).
  4. Click 'OK'.
  5. Select 'Tools'and then 'Add-ins'again.
  6. Check the two Analysis ToolPak add-ins.
  7. Click 'OK'.
  8. Try the Engine Room feature or template that was causing the problem.
  9. If this does not work, try closing and reopening Excel between steps 4) and 5).
If this does not resolve the issues, please contact Engine Room support with answers to the following questions:
  1. What versions of Excel, Engine Room and Windows are you using?
  2. Have you installed any software or upgrades recently? If so, what?
  3. Have you uninstalled any software recently? If so, what?
  4. Have you had any computer viruses recently? If so, which ones?
  5. Do you have any other 3rd party Excel add-ins? If so, which ones?
  6. Do you use Citrix (or something similar) to run applications over your network? If so, which applications?
  7. Have you had any memory errors, blue-screens-of-death or any other hardware type problems? If so, what?
• I am using a feature of Engine Room that requires a data sheet. I identify my data sheet and enter my data but, when I try to access Engine Room, I get an error 1004: Method 'Range' of object '_Worksheet' failed.
This is most likely caused by inadvertently deleting a row of the data sheet or pasting data onto a part of the data sheet that caused the data sheet to be corrupted. Possible workaround:
  • Use Edit-->Paste Special-->Values to paste your data into the data sheet. Paste the header row separately.
  • Paste your data before you use Engine Room to identify your data sheet.
  • If you use Engine Room to create a blank data sheet, use Engine Room to re-identify the same data sheet after you paste your data.
• I am using Engine Room 2007. I get messages that templates have been moved or changed. I look in the templates installation folder that is identified when I click on "Installation Locations" in the Engine Room Help menu and the templates are there and have not been changed.
The most likely cause for this is that Excel 2007 has entered "compatibility mode" by opening a file from a previous version of Excel. Even if that file is closed, compatibility mode will cause problems with Engine Room. The work around is to close Excel 2007 and reopen and not open files from previous versions of Excel before using Engine Room.
• When I start Excel, I receive an error: "Compile Error in Hidden Module: DistMon".
DistMon is not part of Engine Room. This error most often occurs because of a problem with an Adobe Acrobat add-in. Please review this Microsoft Knowledgebase article for more information and a recommended resolution.
• How do I configure Internet Explorer to open Office documents in the appropriate Office program instead of in Internet Explorer?
Please refer to this Microsoft article which details how to make the necessary configuration changes.
• The audio on the course page has background noise: popping, crackling, static.
