Purpose
SigmaSim® was created to provide a simulated real-world project as a primary practice component within a Lean Six Sigma blended learning experience. As an interactive online case study, SigmaBrew integrates the various Lean Six Sigma tools into a realistic project structure, within a game architecture. The game can be played as teams within a multi-player instructor-led environment, or individually.
How it Works
Participants are first presented with the organization’s case history, including background data highlighting the need to undertake an improvement project. After working through balanced scorecard and project selection exercises, participants work through the DMAIC process phase by phase. In each phase, there are multiple choices to collect data or implement improvement actions – with varying benefits. Many “wrong” choices are available which offer no benefit. Like the real world, these choices to collect data or implement an improvement action all have costs in terms of time and/or money, which are tracked as project metrics on a project scorecard. Collected data are processed by the participants using various Lean Six Sigma analytical tools, as required. Correct answers to tollgate questions yield an improved process metric, and a higher economic return. Near misses provide partial benefit, and wide misses may entail additional penalties to project cost and timing.

The first available instance of SigmaSim is based on MoreSteam’s SigmaBrewTM case study – a large specialty coffee retailer struggling with quality and customer service issues. SigmaBrew is also used as the backstory for MoreSteam’s InBoxTM simulation - a virtual Lean Office Kaizen event. SigmaSim and InBox can be paired together to illustrate different improvement project approaches (Kaizen vs. DMAIC), and to practice a wider range of analytical and improvement tools within a blended learning model. The SigmaBrew instance of SigmaSim may also be purchased as an individual license and played as a practice project to prepare for certification.

What Makes SigmaSim Unique?
SigmaSim realistically represents a Lean Six Sigma DMAIC project environment by providing a series of critical questions, requiring analytical thinking, rather than a prescriptive walk through a series of tools. The participant must make decisions about what to do next: which data to collect, which actions to take, and how to manage team dynamics, while minimizing project expenses and cycle time. Several patents are pending for MoreSteam's innovative simulation and game technologies.
