Tips to Enliven Your eLearning
Virtual Study Halls, Webcasts, and Real-Time Online Learning
A new report and survey from the eLearning Guild,
“Getting Started with Synchronous e-Learning,” helps practitioners
understand the basic principles and current state of the technology
used for live, online training. Synchronous eLearning is a fancy way of
describing any live training, whether it’s done as an online slideshow
presentation, video feed, or virtual breakout session. Attendees join a
session at a designated time and are able to interact with the
presenter and each other.
Live sessions in the form of virtual study halls, topical webcasts, and team meetings can be a powerful supplement to asynchronous
eLearning. Asynchronous learning has the advantage of flexing to each
individual's scheduling requirements; therefore, a blend of the two
approaches has been found to be the most effective learning model.
Individuals can progress through the content at their own pace
(asynchronous) and then reinforce their understanding in group sessions
(synchronous). However, in order to be effective, the real-time online
sessions take some finesse. Read some tips for
better synchronous sessions.

Focus on Things That Matter
What's your reference point for project selection? Lean Six Sigma projects need to support the organization's strategic objectives, yet it can be difficult to sometimes see how every day decisions relate to shareholder value. Here is a resource suggested by Dr. Scott Sink, The Ohio State University, to help you decide where to spend your precious time and resources. View Deloitte Enterprise Value Map™.

If you're looking to supplement your
statistical reference library with a handbook that offers a
non-traditional approach, then you might be interested in The Manga Guide to Statistics. This book was translated to English in 2009 from a best-selling series
written by Shin Takahashi in Japan. It is an introduction to basic
statistics, starting with data types and progressing to hypothesis
testing.
At first glance, the Anime cartoon
strips in the book seem to target a high school audience. Maybe that's
true, but when you're trying to keep your p's, t's, and z's straight,
it sure is nice to lighten the mood. Each of the seven chapters
includes not only the cartoon to introduce a concept, but also a
clearly written text explanation, and an exercise with solution.
Another alternative to lighten your book shelf, The Cartoon Guide to Statistics,
is an entertaining introduction to statistics that is still selling to
stats profs and trainers after seventeen years. Its wit has universal
appeal. The concluding pages include an important reminder about data
quality:
Seemingly small errors
in sampling, measurement, and data recording can play havoc with any
analysis. R. A. Fisher, Geneticist and Founder of modern Statistics,
not only designed and analyzed animal breeding experiments, he also
cleaned the cages and tended the animals, because he knew that the loss
of an animal would influence his results. Modern Statisticians, with
their computers, databases, and government grants, have lost some of
this hands-on attitude.
Authors Larry Gonick and
Woollcott Smith suggest that if you graphed the mean mass of rat
droppings under statisticians' fingernails over time, the curve steeply
descends and approaches zero. Don't forget --- the results are only as good as the data.
Sound Bytes: Goodyear Tire & Rubber
In a time when
its industry watched profits tumble, Goodyear's
Darren Wells, EVP and CFO,
discussed the measures his company is
taking to get back in the black. "If we look at specific drivers of
cost savings in the quarter, we saw results in each of the categories
of
our four point plan delivering savings for 2009 of $730 million ...
this brings our total over the four years of this plan to $2.5
billion. This plan was a huge success for the company and ... helped
us manage
through the worst business conditions any of us have seen in our
careers."
"Cost savings will continue to be a major focus. Savings will be
significant and will continue to focus in four areas; continuous
improvement, low cost sourcing, footprint and SAG. ... we expect to
achieve savings of $1 billion over the next three years. Similar to
the last four years, we expect to generate the majority of this savings
from continuous improvement actions reflecting lean and six sigma
efforts and the implementation of our USW contract."

100% of last month's survey respondents said that Lean Six Sigma Belt re-certification should require recent experience using or teaching the DMAIC tools.
| Additionally, consensus was that authorship of LSS materials (article, blog, book, white paper) and training/education related to the BOK should also count. No one said that initial certification should be automatically granted for a life time.
