Online Learning Game Fights Identity Theft
From Staff Blogger Chris Paret .... SSN not included

Dog tag with fingerprintAfter a late night of cards and video games all I wanted to do was sleep in Sunday morning. So when the phone rang at 8:30 AM, and the Caller ID read ‘Card Services’, my mood turned dark. For the past few weeks, I had received calls from my credit card company trying to sell me this insurance or that new feature. When I picked up the phone, ready to chew out the caller, I was thrown for a loop. An automated voiced informed me that they had detected irregular – and potentially fraudulent - activity on my card.

That woke me up. After speaking with the credit card representative and my father -- a former fraud investigation expert -- I knew I had to determine if the thief had simply stolen my credit card information or – much worse - my identity.

Anyone who watches even a little TV has probably seen the (sometimes funny, sometimes frightening) commercials warning of the need to check your credit reports to make sure that no one has stolen your identity (ala ‘freecreditreport.com’ commercials). A quick Internet search took me to OnGuard Online, a government sponsored Web site. The next thing you know, I’m playing a video game called ‘ID Theft Faceoff’ designed to help me know what to do next and where to look for more information.   Read the complete blog.

Online Training, Blended Learning Delivers Advantages
U.S. Department of Education releases new meta-analysis

DOE Meta-AnalysisMeta-analysis, a technique for combining the results of multiple experiments, can help to reveal larger trends that may not be evident from an analysis of one or a small number of discrete studies. The latest meta-analysis on online learning - published by the U.S. Department of Education in May 2009 - reported the following key findings:
  • Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction.
  • Instruction using a blend of online and face-to-face elements had the largest advantage, with purely online instruction next, followed by purely face-to-face instruction.
  • Elements such as video or online quizzes do not appear to influence the amount that students learn in online classes, whereas the greater time on task and additional materials provided in online instruction did bring a greater benefit to students.
  • Online learning can be enhanced by giving individual learners control of their interactions with media and prompting learner reflection and self-assessment.
  • The effectiveness of online learning approaches appears quite broad across different content and learner types.

How do you conduct a measurement system analysis when the part is destroyed during measurement?

Bent NailsGage R&R is a well known procedure for evaluating measurement systems. It breaks down the total process variation into its components: part-to-part or process variation, appraiser variation (reproducibility), and measurement system variation (repeatability) and under the ANOVA method, the appraiser-by-part variation. The general and most commonly used form of the study, called a Crossed Gage study, consists of repeated measuring of the same parts by multiple appraisers. This form of study assumes that the parts are preserved in their original condition and do not undergo any changes, physical or otherwise, between trials or between handoffs between appraisers.

Summer Reading
 Brain Rules
Our suggestion for this month is a somewhat offbeat, albeit  pertinent, selection entitled Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina.  It's offbeat in the sense that the author is a developmental molecular biologist.  Since most of us don't have a personal subscription to the Journal of Neuroscience, Dr. Medina offers to bring us  into the brain science loop to better understand considerations for our work and training environments.

He opens the book by saying that if you wanted to create an education environment that was directly opposed to our natural brain functions, you'd build a classroom.  If your objective was to build an anti-brain business environment, you'd design something like a cubicle.  The book offers practical considerations for leaders, instructors, and presenters organized by 12 principles.  While you're not likely to find groundbreaking insights in this book, you will find a fact basis for common tenets that have previously been undervalued and therefore somewhat ignored.

Brain Rules published March 31, 2008 is available in hardcover, paperback, and various electronic editions.  You may purchase the book online via the brain rules Web site and Amazon.com.

Blamestorming

BlamestormingWe recently heard about a related technique for root cause analysis called "blamestorming". Sound interesting?  Sound familiar?  To learn more, click here.  And no, it's not serious.
