Blink or Think?
Tortoise and hareIn Blink, Malcolm Gladwell provided a number of examples of rapid cognition, our two-second decision making process a.k.a. 'snap judgements'. If its parameters are well understood, it can be used to improve outcomes.  For example, Cook County Hospital in Chicago changed the way they diagnosed heart attacks.  Doctors were instructed to use less information to expedite the diagnostic process.  Cook County thereafter became one of the best places for diagnosing chest pain.  However, Gladwell recognized some of the instances when our quick thinking doesn't serve us so well.

More recently, Daniel Kahneman provided a deeper understanding into the cognitive systems involved in decision making.  Kahneman explains that our intuitive reactions also carry far greater biases in judgement.  He shares recent emperical evidence that shows how our more deliberative thought processes can be used to dampen the negative effects of our snap decisions.

So, blink or think?  One New York Times reviewer offered this takeaway:  "If you've had 10,000 hours of training in a predictable, rapid-feeedback environment -- chess, firefighting, anesthesiology -- then blink.  In all other cases, think.

Sound Byte of Success:  Denver Health

Sound Wave Denver's public hospital and busiest trauma center services a patient population of which 42% is uninsured and logged an estimated $450 million of uncompensated care in 2011.  However, the hospital has been 'in the black since 1991' and achieved a #1 ranking in patient survival.  The facility consistently ranks among the leaders in quality of care benchmarks.

How have they achieved such success with such a challenging financial model?  Much of the credit is given to the adoption of Lean management techniques.  Read the H&HN article.

Getting to "Eureka"
Better ideasWhere do GOOD ideas come from?   Steven Johnson, TED speaker and best-selling author, has studied this question from an environmental perspective.  He shares his findings about the recurring patterns that have historically led to unusual rates of creativity and innovation.  Watch his 4-minute video.

MBB Classes

This unique Blended Program features 72 hours of online study complemented by only two weeks of classes on the OSU Fisher College campus. We offer the onsite courses on a rotating schedule, so you can attend when it's convenient for you.

We'll hold the next on-campus sessions the weeks of March 12-16 and May 7-14.  Learn more.

NEW!  Grapevine
"Grapevine" is a new feature that lets you connect with others in your course.  You can post a question or a message (public or private) and establish your own learning "neighborhood."

Just because you've chosen e-Learning doesn't mean you are alone.  Connect to hundreds of other students from all over the world, working through the same course materials as you.

QA on Break
Leave it to Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory to develop and then chart a "friendship algorithm".  Take a look

While Sheldon's flow charting skills might need some tweaking, this could be fun practice for a team learning the steps of process mapping.
