Meet Me On the Island |
| Experiment with catapulting a team member thru serious hazards |
|
Just when I thought work was my safe haven. Free from my teenager’s battles in World of Warcraft® and free from being Tech Support for my tweener’s ventures on Club Penguin™ and Webkinz®. Then, I got the email: “Our next staff meeting will be held on our newly acquired island. Create your Avatar and see you in Second Life® ….” Well, this Baby Boomer may be all thumbs when it comes to jammin’ on Rock Band®, but here was my chance to at least LOOK like a rock star. And so I did.
Anyone who has tried massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) such as World of Warcraft®, HABBO®, and RuneScape or has hopped on a virtual community with their young kids has unwittingly prepared themselves for their next phase of professional development. More and more real business is being conducted in a virtual world. Apple, Dell, and IBM have developed real estate in Second Life®. Toyota introduced its Scion to Second Lifers allowing them to take complimentary test drives. Reuters offers a hub for news discussions and displays. Now, an increasing number of universities are expanding their presence to host student recruiting and orientation, provide library resources, and start-up small groups.
Last month, North Carolina State University announced that it was receiving $500,000 from Ernst & Young to establish a presence in Second Life ® for the Accounting Department in the College of Management. NCSU has dabbled in Second Life ® for over a year now exploring distance learning and other applications. However, its ambitions are much more aggressive for the future. ... SigmaBrew Challenge
Win a course of your choice
SigmaBrew® DMAIC is MoreSteam.com’s online simulated project game for classroom training. The game uses SigmaBrew®, a fictional case study about a large coffee retailer struggling with quality and customer service issues. SigmaBrew® DMAIC is designed to be identical to the challenges and ambiguity that Belts encounter in real-world projects. Players must decide how to collect and analyze data, implement improvements, and develop control strategies, all the while minimizing project expenses and cycle time.
MoreSteam challenges you to use your Lean Six Sigma know-how to solve the SigmaBrew® DMAIC project! For only $500, you can enroll a team of 1-3 professionals to play the simulation, which can be played over weeks or in as little as 2-3 days. You can also enroll several teams to compete with each other for highest score. By June 1, the top winning team will receive (for each proven team member) a one-year subscription to the MoreSteam course of your choice.
Visit www.sigmabrewchallenge.com for more information and to register your team for the Challenge! |

Did Simulation Save US Airways Flight 1549?
The media and observers called Pilot Chesley Sullenberger's emergency landing on the Hudson River a miracle. But how do pilots prepare for scenarios such as emergency water landings? One of the unsung heroes of this incident was very likely the use of a flight simulator in pilot training.
Smita's Instructor Notes: The Power of a Statistical Test
Smita Skrivanek, MoreSteam’s Principle Statistician, expands on statistical topics in every other issue of MoreNews. If you have a technique or tool you’d like to have Smita discuss in a future issue, send an email with your suggestion to editor@moresteam.com.
What Is the Power of a Test?
The power of a statistical test gives the likelihood of rejecting the null hypothesis when the null hypothesis is false. Just as the significance level (alpha) of a test gives the probability that the null hypothesis will be rejected when it is actually true (a wrong decision), power quantifies the chance that the null hypothesis will be rejected when it is actually false (a correct decision). Thus, power is the ability of a test to correctly reject the null hypothesis. .... Click here for the full article.
Lesson Learned: Don't skip the FMEA
"Well, some of 'em are built so the front doesn't fall off at all."
If you've never seen the John Clarke and Bryan Dawe's sketch about the front of an oil tanker falling off, take a look at this clip from the 7.30 Report.
